MAHARATNA PSU’s:

Maharatna is the status given to top public sector enterprises where the companies have the authority to make foreign investments of upto Rs 5,000 crores without taking any government approval. To be qualified as Maharatna, the company should gain an annual net profit of over Rs. 5,000 crores, net worth of Rs. 15,000 crores and turnover of Rs. 25,000 crores over past three consecutive years. At present the companies which have Maharatna status are: SAIL, ONGC, NTPC, CIL and IOCL.

NAVRATNA PSU’s:

Navratna status is conferred to the companies by the Department of Public Enterprises. To be qualified as a Navratna, the company must obtain a score of 60 out of 100. The score is based on six parameters which include net profit to net worth, total manpower cost to total cost of production or cost of services, PBDIT (Profit before depreciation, interest and taxes) to capital employed, PBDIT to turnover, EPS (Earning per Share) and inter-sectoral performance. Additionally, a company must first be a Miniratna and have four independent directors on its board before it can be made a Navratna. The Navratna status gives privileges to enhance financial and operational autonomy and empowers to invest up to Rs. 1000 crores or 15% of their net worth on a single project without seeking government approval. In a year, these companies can spend up to 30% of their net worth not exceeding Rs. 1000 crores. They will also have the freedom to enter joint ventures, form alliances and float subsidiaries abroad.

2. How to Prepare for PSUs?

  • PSU’s Entrance Exam Question Paper mainly consists of two major sections:
  • Technical Section: Subject specialization of related stream 
  • Non-Technical Section: General Awareness, Current Affairs, English Language, Reasoning & Aptitude.

Hence to crack PSU competitive exam, candidate should prepare for both technical and non-technical sections, where 50% to 70% questions are from technical and remaining questions from non-technical sections.

  • Be aware of exam pattern of different PSU’s like number of technical questions, number of non-technical questions, negative marking, exam duration, marks per question etc.
     
  • Always make it a habit of referring to previous year question papers.
     
  • Adopt Reference books for derivations, equations, conceptual thought process, theory etc.
     
  • Short Cut Techniques: Traditional methods to solve numerical problems is a time taking process, try to adopt short cut techniques to save the time.
     
  • Practice previous year question papers and analyze in which topics you are weak and concentrate more on those topics. Always try to solve the papers in given time limit to obtain the idea that how many questions you are able to solve in given time limits.
     
  • Group Discussion Round:Group Discussion is a crucial round conducted for shortlisted candidates. Good communication skills, topic knowledge, team spirit, leadership qualities, patience level are the major parameters to be considered.
  • Personal Interview:Sound technical knowledge, positive attitude, body language, good communication skills play an important role to clear personal interviews.

 

3.PSU Exam Pattern

Examination pattern

     Examination pattern will be different for vary from one PSU to another.
*   Number of Questions: 150-200 Question
*   Time duration: 2 – 21/2 Hrs
*   Negative Marking: 1/3
*   Technical:75% of total questions
*   General aptitude with English: 25%

Selection Procedure

     The usual selection procedure followed by maximum no. of PSUs includes the following stages:
     Stage-I:- Written Examination (Generally on Sunday)
     Stage-II:- Interview and GD
     Stage-III:- Medical Examination

Stage-I :- Written Examination

Duration:- 1-3 hrs (avg 2 hrs) 
Written exam of various PSUs can be divided mainly into 4 sections:- 

1. Technical
2. Aptitude & Reasoning
3. English & RC
4. General Awareness & current affairs

Stage-II:- Interview

The interview is mainly conducted to lure the hidden potential of the candidate, thus it focuses on:

1. Maximum stress on testing the technical knowledge of the candidate.
2. More of HR Question limited to the general introduction, work experience (if any), hobbies etc.
3. Final year project is very important for the interview.

Group Discussion is also conducted at some PSUs with the interview, which involves:

1. Duration is 20 -30 minutes.
2. Usually easy topics are given for discussion.
3. Contemporary social and political issues are highly probable topics to be given.
4. Topics on environmental and technical issues can also be given.
    * Note:- Interview and GD in most of the PSU’s can also be taken in Hindi

Stage-III:- Medical Examination

In some of the PSUs, candidates selected on the basis of their performance in written exam, interview and GD are finally called for a medical check-up prior to their appointment and training.

Things need to be remembered

Apart from the above pattern of PSU’s examinations, followings things are also considered:

1.There can be an additional stage in some of the PSUs where only short-listed candidates are allowed to appear for the written exam. All the applicants fulfilling the eligibility criteria are screened again on the basis of their % of B.Tech primarily and depending upon the no. of vacancies Only selected candidates are called for the written exam. eg- ISRO, BHEL etc.

2.Some PSU’s don’t hold interviews as a part of their selection procedure eg- BSNL (JTO).

3.Though, the general pattern of examination has never been declared by any PSU, the trend of weightage given to different stages of selection which is followed by most of the PSUs is: Written – 70-85%, Interview – 15-30%, GD – 5%.
